Keith Garrett, M.A. |
|||
Parent, Founding Board Member/Treasurer for Arizona Hands & Voices.
Keith is the parent of two children, Joshua, 17 and Joy, 9. Joy was identified with a moderate hearing loss when she was 3 ½ years old. Her hearing loss is due to Connexin 26, a recessive genetic condition which causes hearing loss. Keith and Julie adopted Joy when she was 7 ½ months old. Julie suddenly and unexpectedly died just 7 ½ months after returning from China with Joy. Because of Keith’s experiences in life he brings a unique perspective on life, parenting, fathering, and living with a child with a hearing loss and the needs that parents have as they strive to do their best. Keith has worked at the state of Arizona in the Newborn Hearing Screening follow-up program and served two hospitals as the audiology technician. His experience with newborn screening programs has given him a close-up view of the interaction between parents and newborn hearing screening people and programs. Keith has presented at the National EHDI Conference and locally at a number of Hands & Voices events. Topics have included Barriers to a Timely Diagnosis, and Empower Parents Empower Children. Keith is open to developing additional topics as requested.
